Today I’m going to switch from blogging about writing to blogging about autism because the new research suggesting why autism is more prevalent in boys than girls is very interesting, and tends to back up what a lot of parents of autistic kids have suspected–the huge role of diet and minerals in the development of autism.
Although a lot of research has been done in regards to autism, there’s still so much mystery surrounding the disorder, including much research which could help parents help their own children. As a parent of a child who has autism, yes, the early interventions have helped considerably. But the one thing which has made all the difference in her life and improvement has been changing her diet and giving her supplements, the one thing it seems research has not been done on. The changes were so profound that she went from a child who barely spoke at 2 1/2 to a child who seems almost completely normal. Yes, she is still autistic, but for the most part, unless you already know her history.
Now this study is suggesting that calcium deficiencies play a role in autism. Yes, I know it also has to do with a gene that regulates the calcium flow, but it also seems to me that if there is a deficiency, perhaps giving more calcium might actually help, considering that other studies have also shown a calcium deficiency that affects the bone density in autistic kids.
